Japan invests $500M in Ogun, Lagos power supply

The Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has invested $500 million to enhance power supply in the Ogun and Lagos regions.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Power, Mr. Adebayo Adelabu, during a courtesy visit by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun on Friday.

In a statement issued by Bolaji Tunji, Special Adviser on Strategic Communication and Media Relations, Adelabu highlighted that the JICA investment would significantly bolster Nigeria’s economy by strengthening transmission infrastructure along the Lagos-Ogun Industrial Corridor.

The investment is specifically targeted at industrial clusters in Agbara, Mowe, and Shagamu.

Adelabu also mentioned the ongoing Presidential Power Initiative (PPI) projects, which aim to enhance power transmission infrastructure within and beyond Ogun’s industrial corridors.

Additionally, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) is working on projects to improve power supply in the region. These initiatives include constructing new power transmission substations, upgrading existing ones, and enhancing high-voltage power lines.

The Minister called on Governor Abiodun to work with the ministry to encourage gas pipeline operators to upgrade infrastructure passing through Ogun State, ensuring better gas supply quality and quantity to power plants and industries.

In response, Governor Abiodun praised the minister for the noticeable improvements in power supply across the country.

He commended Adelabu for the ongoing transformation in the power sector and urged him to maintain the momentum, emphasizing the importance of enhancing power infrastructure in Ogun, a key industrial hub in Nigeria.

The governor also expressed his eagerness for Adelabu to visit Ogun officially to meet with industrialists in the state and explore further opportunities for collaboration and cooperation.
