"It had to be Jamie Carragher asking it" -- James Maddison

Tottenham’s controversial 2-1 victory over Liverpool earlier this season, marred by a contentious VAR decision was once again brought into the spotlight by Liverpool legend, Jamie Carragher to Spurs’ James Maddison.

During an interview with former the Liverpool legend, former Leicester City midfielder, James Maddison was playfully probed about the possibility of a replay.

In that September clash, Tottenham emerged as the victors, but the match’s defining moment was the disallowed Luis Diaz goal.

This decision was subsequently acknowledged as a “significant human error” by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), who termed it a “clear and obvious factual error.”

Furthermore, PGMOL expressed that VAR should have intervened but failed to do so, leading to a comprehensive review of the situation.

The controversy prompted some quarters to call for a replay of the fixture, believing it had been unjustly affected by the VAR error. However, these pleas were ultimately unheeded, and the result stood.

In a light-hearted exchange during an interview with James Maddison following Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Fulham, Jamie Carragher jokingly broached the subject of a replay.

Carragher, with a mischievous grin, asked Maddison,

“Big game Friday (against Crystal Palace). You’ve done really well. How do you think you’ll get on in that replay against Liverpool?”

James Maddison, fully aware of the playful nature of the question, responded with a laugh, saying,

“I just know by the tone of Carragher’s voice that was going to be a silly question.”

During the same interview, a technical glitch allowed Maddison to hear the post-match comments of opposition manager Marco Silva through his headphones.

When Carragher inquired about what Silva was saying, Maddison humorously remarked, “He’s saying ‘Maddison’s goal was excellent tonight.'”
