Israeli Air Strike kills Hezbollah Commander in Lebanon
Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah continue to heighten as the Israeli military has announced the killing of a prominent Hezbollah commander in Lebanon.
Ali Ahmad Hussein, a member of Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Force, was reportedly targeted and “eliminated” during an overnight air strike conducted by Israeli jets in the as-Sultaniyah area of Southern Lebanon.
The Israeli military issued a statement on Monday, accusing Hussein of orchestrating attacks against its forces in recent months. This development marks another episode in the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Iran-backed militant group.
In response to the airstrike, the United Nations (UN) condemned the violence, emphasizing the necessity for an immediate cessation of hostilities.
UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Joanna Wronecka, along with the commander of the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, Aroldo Lazaro, jointly stated,
“The unrelenting cycle of strikes and counterstrikes in breach of the cessation of hostilities constitute the most serious violation of Security Council Resolution 1701 since its adoption in 2006.”
Simultaneously, reports indicate a retaliatory response from Hezbollah, with dozens of rockets launched from Lebanon into the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Hezbollah fighters claimed to have targeted an army base and air defense posts in the region.
The exchange of fire between Hezbollah and the Israeli military along Lebanon’s southern frontier has intensified, coinciding with the ongoing conflict in Gaza. These developments have raised concerns about the potential for a broader regional conflict.
According to sources, Israeli strikes have resulted in the deaths of approximately 270 Hezbollah fighters over the past six months, as well as around 50 civilians, including children, medical personnel, and journalists. Conversely, Hezbollah’s rocket attacks have claimed the lives of around a dozen Israeli soldiers and a similar number of civilians.
