Isiokpo council secretariat set on fire amid tensions

The freshly erected council secretariat in Isiokpo, Ikwerre Local Government Area, has been set on fire.

A local in the area verified the event to Channels Television on Monday, despite videos circulating on social media showing the administrative building on fire.

Police have not commented on the incident, and the extent of the damage is still unknown.

The commissioner of police ordered the removal of the police personnel who were securing the 23 council secretariats.

Earlier, some areas of the Eleme council secretariat caught fire.

Oji Ngofa, a former ambassador from Eleme, informed Channels Television that the newly elected chairman of the council, Brain Gokpa, arrived at the secretariat with his councillors and supporters.

According to him, the LG boss noticed that some of the council’s buildings had been set on fire.

The new council chairman, his councillors, and supporters have promised to take over the secretariat no matter what happens.

In Emohua council, some unknown individuals have barricaded the entrance to the secretariat. They’re resisting the resumption of the new Chairman, David Omereju. In a social media video, they can be heard chanting “No Wike, No Rivers State!!”

No one has been taken into custody thus far, and the police have not yet stated the circumstances. In certain state governments, there’s a tangible worry of a possible violence spree.

The event raises the number of problems that have arisen since Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara swore in the new chairman on Sunday.

The run-up to Saturday’s election was full of suspense, mystery, and turns. During that time and on election day, there were also shootings, protests, and explosions that affected the citizens of Rivers.
