Internet outage hits Nigeria: undersea cable damage causes telecom, banking downtime

An internet outage as a result of damage to international undersea cables supplying them with connectivity has hit Telecommunications companies and banks in Nigeria .

Major undersea cables near Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire was damaged and is causing downtime across West and South African countries.

Part of the cables affected by the damage are the West Africa Cable System (WACS), the Africa Coast to Europe (ACE), MainOne, and SAT3 cables.

Telecom providers has received several complains from their customers on Thursday especially, MTN, Airtel and GLO. Commercial banks were also affected as they are unable to process transactions.

MTN issued a statement as it’s response to customers complaints over the poor internet connection being experienced

“We apologize for the challenges you may be experiencing with internet speed and accessing data services at the moment.

“This is a result of damage to international undersea cables across East & West Africa.

The repair process is ongoing to resolve the situation as soon as possible. Please look out for further updates.”
