INEC warns Edo political parties to end campaigns before Thursday midnight

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cautioned political parties and candidates in Edo not to conduct electioneering campaigns after Thursday midnight.

Mr Sam Olumekun, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee issued the warning in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

Olumekun stated that, in accordance with Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 and item 12 of the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2024 Edo Governorship election, all political party campaigns will stop at midnight on Thursday.

“As of midnight today, it is unlawful for any political party in Edo State to hold rallies, processions, or media campaigns.

“These prohibitions, including sanctions, are provided for in Section 96 of the Electoral Act 2022,” added the minister.

Olumekun also cautioned parties, candidates, and supporters not to attend voting stations dressed in campaign costumes or carrying campaign materials on election day.

“We urge parties, candidates and their supporters to take note of the provisions of the law for compliance,” according to him.
