Some call him Mr money, money, money, though he simply prefers ‘Capital F.E.M.I’ as his brand name. This obviously talented artiste, who is also younger brother to ace comedian Gbenga Adeyinka the first, has been able to make a name for himself in the Nigerian music scene within two years despite still working on his album. He spoke with Gabriel Olatunji-Legend recently and bares it all.

When and where did you start music?

I started music in the states and it was in high school the music bug bite me, I didn’t take it seriously until I was in College.

How did you know this would be for real?

I didn’t know when I first started, it hit me when I had my teachers, friends and then my family members letting me know that I was good and I should take it seriously and I also made a self observation that this is what I was meant to do.

When did you begin music professionally?

That was in college, I started off with a few groups and then to writing songs for artistes and then I decided to go solo in doing so.

Did you write songs for any known artiste?

I wrote a song for an artiste named PrettyBoy which then i found out that Cassidy liked it and he got on the song and this was when Cassidy was hot. I sang the chorus to the song.

Any knowledge of any musical instrument?

Yes, my voice.

Why is your album not out?

Because it is a process, writing, working with the right producer to recording and delivering.

Where are you now in the process?

We are done recording. We are mixing and mastering which is the final stage and also close to completion.

I was listening to one of your tracks capital F.E.M.I and the lyrics got at me ‘Thank you God, for the blessings, lessons’. Tell me about the lessons you have learnt so far, then the blessings?

Wow! It is nice that you listened, thanks. Am blessed in many ways and I get to do what I love to do.

How rough has it ever been for you?

It has its ups and down, you know when you have done all you should do and you come back  home and not sure of what to expect. My dad was not crazy about it but now he is in huge support of what I do.

Why didn’t he support you then?

He wanted me to do something else. He is just a father that wants the best for his son like any great father would.

What led to the change of heart?

He had a change of heart when my cousins and my brother starts to tell him how good I am and that I could make something out of it. And also seeing, hearing and believing how good his son is. I mean a lot of convincing went into that.

How far did you go in convincing him?

Just sitting with him and telling him to let me follow my heart and that I will be fine. He called and told me that if this is what I really want to do he will support me but that I have to do it all the way and make something out of it. I remember that phone call when I was in the states. I cried when I got off the phone because then I knew he believed and he showed it by wiring the money for the recording and video shoot of the song that got me noticed in the industry which is Never Felt a Love. The song also got me a few award nominations in the industry.

You are in a genre of music that has heavyweights such as 2face, Banky W. Don’t dread catching up with these guys?

No. Not at all, there is room for me.

Do you think you are better than any of these guys?

I am just doing what I do best just like they do what they do best and we are doing it well.

Do you think you can do better than they are doing?

I am doing what I do and making sure I do what I do well.

Do you mean you are better off like this?

I mean we are all doing what we do best and we make sure we do it well.

At the start, why did you choose Kennis Music above other labels?

It is simple. It is the best label and we had the same interest. They have been in the industry for long and they are good at what they do.

I know people who will not agree with you?

That is because everyone is entitled to what they choose to think. I have been in the game for about two years and I have been nominated for a few awards and remember that I have not dropped an album. I did not just do that on my own, Kennis Music played their role.

How would you rate your label and the bosses?

Good! And my bosses know their stuff.

What do you want that they are not doing?

They are doing the things that needs to be done, and it is doing what it needs to do.

How would you define success?

Achieving it all through all odds and having more than enough to show for it.

Who is the lucky woman in your life?

No one yet and I know I will be the lucky one when that person comes.

So you mean you are available?

Yes I am.
