The Nigerian police force has reacted to reports making the round that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba ordered the re-establishment of the defunct Special Anti – Robbery Squad (SARS).

According to an online medium SaharaReporters, Usman Alkali Baba gave the directive for SARS to be brought after it was disbanded last year following the #EndSARS protests and released new terms and conditions on the operation of SARS officials.

Baba reportedly said that no SARS personnel is allowed to interface in any civil matter, adding that they are not allowed to interfere in cybercrime or arrest suspected fraudsters.

“No SARS personnel is allowed to interface in any civil matter. They are not allowed to interfere in cybercrime (yahoo yahoo).

“No SARS personnel is allowed to conduct a stop and search exercise unless there is a distress call from victims or members of the public.

“They are not allowed to be involved in commercial matters, debt recovery, (landlord vs tenant issues).

“They are not allowed to interfere in any social/relationship cases (marital matters, boyfriend/girlfriend relationship).

“They are strictly for armed robbery and kidnapping cases!”.

But police public relations officer, Frank Mba refuted the reports saying there is no plan whatsoever to bring back the disbanded SARS.

” SARS is gone for good and will not resurrect under any guise whatsoever.

The IGP notes that the Force has since reorganized its operational structure to fill the vacuum created by the disbandment of SARS. Currently, the leadership of the Force is focused on efforts at deepening reforms within the Police and bequeathing Nigerans a Police Force that will be more effective, efficient, technology-driven, humane and Rule of Law-compliant.

The IGP therefore calls on members of the public to disregard the report which is absolutely false and deliberately intended to disinform and misinform members of the public”, the statement reads.
