IFA priest advocates traditional oath-taking to curb corruption

An Ifa priest, Ifayemi Elebuibon, has suggested that swearing-in public officials through traditional deities could significantly reduce corruption in Nigeria.

Speaking with newsmen in Osogbo on Thursday, Elebuibon emphasized that using the “Ogun” (god of iron) and other traditional methods for oath-taking would deter politicians from corrupt activities.

Elebuibon pointed out that politicians are likely to fear the severe consequences associated with breaking an oath taken with Ogun or other traditional deities.

“The god of iron delivers swift judgment whenever promises are broken,” he said.

The Araba of Osogbo expressed concern over the high levels of corruption affecting all sectors of the economy and the general populace.

“What makes politicians misbehave is the leniency of the Bible and the Qur’an used for oath-taking.

They know they can seek forgiveness and continue sinning, but with Ogun, there will be instant judgment.”

He advocated for traditional oath-taking as a means to curb corruption, urging politicians to try it and witness its repercussions.

“Traditional oath-taking is a way to curb corruption,” Elebuibon asserted.

On the topic of selecting traditional rulers, Elebuibon criticized the involvement of governors in the process, stating it is against tradition.

He argued that kingmakers should be responsible for selecting traditional rulers and that governors’ interference diminishes the integrity of the traditional institution.

While acknowledging that the government should ensure the welfare of traditional rulers, Elebuibon maintained that they should be excluded from the selection process to preserve traditional values.
