“I will be gutted if Liverpool sells him” — McManaman
Former Liverpool midfielder Steve McManaman has voiced his concern over the potential departure of Joe Gomez from the club, expressing his sentiments about the invaluable role the 26-year-old plays within Jurgen Klopp’s squad.
Gomez, who has proven to be a pivotal figure in Liverpool‘s defensive line this season, showcasing his versatility across different positions due to injuries plaguing teammates like Andy Robertson, Joel Matip, and Kostas Tsimikas, has drawn admiration from McManaman for his quiet professionalism and adaptability on the field.
In an interview with the ECHO, McManaman emphasized Gomez’s understated nature, contrasting it with the modern footballer’s prevalent social media presence and public exposure.
McManaman highlighted Gomez’s unassuming approach to the game, labeling him as an exceptional professional and praising his ability to seamlessly transition between various defensive roles at Klopp’s behest.
Reflecting on Gomez’s contributions, McManaman stated,
“He gets on with the game and I think he is a superstar.”
However, he acknowledged the challenges that come with being proficient in multiple positions, noting that while Gomez excels as a defender, his versatility might lead some to expect him to excel in every role he plays.
Expressing his desire for Gomez to remain at Liverpool, McManaman admitted,
“I would be gutted if he left because people like Gomez are absolutely priceless to you at a football club.”
He drew parallels to long-serving players at other clubs, like Real Madrid’s Lucas Vazquez and Nacho, emphasizing the significance of such players within a team’s fabric.
Throughout the season, Gomez has made 24 appearances for Liverpool, stepping up to fulfill diverse demands placed upon him as injuries have shuffled the defensive lineup.
