"I wanted to get a gun after the incident" — Ex Premier League star

In a career that has spanned continents, cultures, and club rivalries, former Premier League footballer Colin Kazim-Richards, 38, recently shared a chilling experience from his stint in Mexico that almost led him to take extreme measures for his safety.

Known for his resilience on the pitch, Kazim-Richards revealed on the Broadtalks podcast that his Mexican football adventure took a terrifying turn when he found himself on the radar of a “cartel,” receiving messages demanding money.

The former Premier League player’s journey across 18 clubs worldwide—from England to Turkey, Greece, Brazil, and eventually Mexico—saw him signing for Pachuca after an impressive season at Veracruz. However, the excitement of a fresh challenge quickly faded when he began receiving unsettling messages on his phone.

“I’m getting messages from this ‘cartel,’ and they’re demanding money,” he recounted. What started as curiosity soon turned to fear, with texts from someone allegedly tied to cartel activities telling him to pay up. “They wanted a thousand dollars, messaging me every day.”

When his wife noticed his escalating concern, the situation reached a boiling point. “She was stressing, and I was thinking, ‘Do I need to protect myself?'” he explained, admitting he went so far as to tell his coach he planned to buy a gun.

The unexpected twist came when Kazim-Richards and his friends discovered that the sender was a former cartel member, now in prison, trying his luck at extortion from behind bars.

For Kazim-Richards, who has tackled a wide range of challenges throughout his career, this incident in Mexico left a lasting impact.

After exiting Pachuca, the ex Premier League player eventually returned to Europe, playing for Derby County and Turkish side Fatih Karagümrük before stepping back from the sport in 2023.

Kazim-Richards’ story offers a rare glimpse into the shadows some players face when stepping into unfamiliar and potentially dangerous territories to pursue their careers.
