I never cleared Abba Kyari of money laundering – Malami seeks further probe

Abubakar Malami (SAN), the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, has said that he didn’t clear embattled police officer, Abba Kyari, but recommended further investigation against him, TopNaija reports.

Recall that Malami triggered a controversy after saying that there’s no “sufficient evidence” that Abba Kyari was involved in the money laundering case he was indicted in by the US Department of Justice.

However making clarification in a statement released by his media aide, Dr. Umar Gwandu on Sunday, March 13, Malami said media reports about a contradiction in his stance on the matter show a misunderstanding and misconception of the issue.

He said;

“The office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice’s stance is that no conclusion has been reached in the direction of absence of evidence relating to the first report.

“The issues were raised for further investigation with a view to cover the field in investigation with a view to arrive at an informed decision.”

Meanwhile, Kyari who is now facing fresh drug trafficking charges brought against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), pleaded not guilty before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Abuja on Monday.

The NDLEA had filed eight counts of hard drug trafficking against him along with six others.

According to the agency, Mr Kyari, between January 19 and 25, dealt in 17.55 kilograms of cocaine.

He is also being charged with obstruction of justice through attempted bribery of NDLEA officers.
