"I left the club after one chat with Ten Hag" — Ex-Man United star

Former Manchester United academy product James Garner opens up about what prompted him to leave the Erik ten Hag set up.

In the wake of Erik ten Hag’s arrival at Manchester United, several players found themselves at a crossroads, with some opting to move on after tough conversations with the new boss. James Garner, a highly regarded product of United’s academy, has now opened up about his decision to leave the club, citing one pivotal conversation with Ten Hag as the moment he knew his future lay elsewhere.

Garner, who had just come off an impressive loan spell with Nottingham Forest, hoped to cement a place in United’s first team. However, after a frank discussion with Ten Hag in the summer of 2022, it became clear that the Dutchman didn’t see him as a key part of his plans.

“He’s an approachable guy, but very strict,” Garner told BBC Sport. “I asked him directly if I’d be part of his squad. The conversation didn’t go as I’d hoped, and I knew then I needed to move on for the sake of my career.”

Garner didn’t want to become a benchwarmer at Old Trafford, especially with United signing several midfielders under Ten Hag. The 22-year-old moved to Everton soon after, securing regular first-team football in a £15 million deal.

With only seven appearances in a United shirt, Garner’s decision reflects the harsh realities many young players face at top clubs: sometimes, it’s not about talent, but timing and tactical fit. As Ten Hag reshapes United, Garner’s departure offers a glimpse into the Dutch manager’s ruthlessly clear vision for his squad.
