"I honestly thought the protests would help" — Destiny Etiko

Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Destiny Etiko takes to Instagram to ask a pertinent question; what did the nationwide protests achieve?

There are a lot of things that few years ago would have been in the realms of fantasy in Nigeria if predicted to happen, and it is the current fuel pump hike that surprisingly has a lot of Nigerians quiet.

However, Nollywood actress, Destiny Etiko has taken on to the Instagram podium to lament the agonizing fuel pump hike amidst the harshening economic climate of the country.

The sharp increase in fuel costs has sent shockwaves across the country, with many Nigerians now struggling to afford even the most basic necessities, including food.

Destiny Etiko’s outcry follows a similar expression of frustration from fellow Nollywood star Kate Henshaw, who recently criticized the NNPC for the relentless surge in fuel prices. Etiko highlighted the severe impact these rising costs are having on ordinary Nigerians, painting a grim picture of a society where the cost of living is pushing people to the brink of survival.

In her heartfelt post, Destiny Etiko lamented the growing difficulty faced by millions who can no longer afford three square meals a day. The actress didn’t shy away from pointing out the stark contrast between the promises of economic recovery and the harsh reality on the ground. Many had hoped that the recent End Bad Governance protests, which mobilized thousands of Nigerians to demand better leadership, would lead to a reversal of the economic downturn. However, the situation appears to be deteriorating even further.

“Fuel is now N1200, what is going on bikonu? I honestly thought the protest was going to help salvage this economic hardship in this country. It’s becoming too hard for a normal layman to eat three square meals. Niger, which way?” Etiko wrote, capturing the desperation and confusion felt by many.

Her words resonate with the growing disillusionment among Nigerians who feel betrayed by a system that seems increasingly out of touch with the struggles of the average citizen. The rising fuel prices have not only made transportation and goods more expensive but have also exacerbated the already dire situation for those living on the margins.

As the crisis deepens, the question remains: how much more can the Nigerian people endure before the tipping point is reached?
