“I feel more at home with Nigeria” — Alex Iwobi

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has opened up about his time with the Nigeria national team and his choice to represent the Green White Green over the White kits of the Three Lions.

Despite being raised in London and receiving his early football training at Arsenal Football Academy, Iwobi opted to play for his ancestral home country.

Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Iwobi moved to London at a young age, where he joined Arsenal’s academy and launched his professional career. He initially represented England at the Under-16, Under-17, and Under-18 levels.

However, he made the significant decision to switch allegiance to Nigeria, making his debut for the Super Eagles on March 25, 2016, against Egypt in an African Cup of Nations qualifier.

Currently playing for Fulham after a stint at Everton, Iwobi has established himself as a key player for the Nigerian national team. In an interview with Hotsports Nigeria, he expressed his contentment with his decision.

“I wouldn’t say I have any regrets. I’d like to say I respected England, they gave me a lot of opportunities and I was able to do them proud,” Iwobi stated.

“But I feel more at home with Nigeria. I feel this is where I’m at home and where I represent, like my family, everyone. I’ve grown up in a Nigerian culture so I’d say that I have no regrets about picking Nigeria over England.”

Alex Iwobi highlighted the welcoming atmosphere and familial environment within the Nigerian team, which has made his transition smoother and more enjoyable.

“I’ve been here for a while now and I’m familiar with the team. Even from the first time I came here they always made me feel welcome,” he added.

“I’m always enjoying myself not just when we are playing matches but in training. In the camp, it’s like one big family so it makes it easier for me to express myself and join in.”

Looking ahead, Alex Iwobi is optimistic about his future with the Super Eagles. “I’m enjoying my time and hopefully there’s more years to come as well,” he concluded.
