As far back in 2022 when news had it that France international, Kylian Mbappe had rejected a potential move to Real Madrid that summer to stay at Paris Saint-Germain, the social media and news platforms went viral with lots of narratives.
It was almost like an abomination turning down the greatest club in the world, for some. However, ahead of a summer move away from PSG upon the expiry of his contract, the World Cup winner has opened up on what really happened.
In a recent interview with CNN, Kylian Mbappe reveals it was a challenging decision to remain with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in 2022. The 25-year-old forward, who was widely anticipated to join Real Madrid two years ago, surprised many by renewing his contract with PSG instead.
Reflecting on his choice, Mbappe described it as a “big decision” influenced by several factors, including the impending World Cup in Qatar. “It was more than just staying at PSG. It was the World Cup in Qatar. There were many things around these things,” he explained.
Mbappe acknowledged the complexity of the situation, noting, “It was a big decision, a difficult decision… but I don’t regret anything. It was not an easy situation and I wish nobody that.”
Despite his commitment to PSG in 2022, Mbappe has since played his final game for the Ligue 1 champions and is set to leave the club as a free agent this summer.
