“I can’t see Manchester United winning there” — Peter Schmeichel
Former Manchester United goalkeeper, Peter Schmeichel, has expressed skepticism about his team’s chances in the upcoming clash against Liverpool in the Premier League.
The Manchester United legend in his defense, cites an array of challenges facing the Red Devils.
Schmeichel’s doubts stem from United’s recent Champions League exit, culminating in a disappointing bottom-place finish in their group behind Bayern Munich, FC Copenhagen, and Galatasaray.
This setback added to the mounting pressure on manager Erik ten Hag, who has faced criticism due to an inconsistent start to the Premier League season, leaving United sixth and trailing league leaders Liverpool by 10 points.
The injury crisis plaguing Manchester United was exacerbated during their recent match against Bayern, as key players Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw were forced off the field due to injuries, further intensifying concerns ahead of the pivotal encounter with Liverpool.
Liverpool, currently setting the pace in the league, solidified their position after a come-from-behind victory against Crystal Palace, showcasing their form and resilience.
Conversely, United’s subsequent defeat to AFC Bournemouth only heightened apprehensions surrounding their form and capacity to compete at the highest level.
Schmeichel, a revered figure among Manchester United faithful, voiced his apprehensions about the team’s prospects for the imminent Anfield clash, particularly considering the absence of crucial players like Bruno Fernandes, who is suspended, and the potential unavailability of Maguire and Shaw due to injuries.
“Everything seems out of sync, I have to be honest. Of course, you have Harry Maguire coming off with an injury. Luke Shaw came off with an injury.” Schmeichel was quoted saying ahead of the clash.
Expressing concern about United’s overall performance, Schmeichel highlighted the challenge of facing Liverpool under such circumstances, questioning the team’s ability to secure a victory at Anfield based on their recent displays.
“We’ve got Liverpool on Sunday. I’m trying not to think about that. It’s going to be without our captain (Bruno Fernandes, who is suspended), without possibly our best player of the last month or so, Harry Maguire. It’s going to be without Luke Shaw if he is injured.
“The prospects are not very good. Based on this performance (Bayern), how can this team go to Anfield and win? I just can’t see it.” Schmeichel added.
