“I can’t escape it” — Loris Karius on Liverpool nightmare
Loris Karius, once Liverpool’s No. 1, has broken his silence on a career-defining moment that cast a long shadow over his football journey: the 2018 Champions League final.
Speaking candidly, Loris Karius reflects on the night he suffered high-profile errors against Real Madrid, the personal fallout that followed, and his unexpected journey since, including fashion runways and DJ sets.
The German goalkeeper admitted the haunting aftermath of his performance in Kyiv. Despite later being diagnosed with a concussion from an off-the-ball clash with Sergio Ramos, the damage was done.

The game’s errors led to months of online abuse, death threats, and a confidence crisis that saw his once-promising career spiral.
“Even when I moved to other clubs, I felt like I couldn’t escape it,” Karius said. “Managers saw me as a risk, even when I thought I deserved chances.”
Loris Karius left Liverpool in 2022 after failing to redeem himself at Anfield. A turbulent loan spell at Besiktas, where he went unpaid for months, and limited game time at Union Berlin marked his post-Kyiv years.
Most recently, a two-year stint with Newcastle brought glimmers of hope, including a solid performance in the Carabao Cup final, but it wasn’t enough to reignite his career.
Now 31, Karius remains a free agent. Despite interest from Italian clubs and offers to join Saudi teams, he’s yet to find the right fit. Retirement is on his mind, though he’s keeping options open.
“A goalkeeper could get injured tomorrow, and I might get the call. You never know.”
With more time on his hands, Loris Karius has embraced passions outside of football. A budding DJ, he’s performed at private events and even walked the runway at Milan Fashion Week for Hugo Boss.
“It’s different from football but brings the same emotions,” he shared.
Spending time with his daughter and exploring music production has given him solace, though he hasn’t closed the door on a return to the game.
“If nothing comes up, I’ve got other things that excite me.”
When asked about Liverpool’s recent clash with Real Madrid, Karius revealed he’d intentionally distanced himself from the game for a while.
“It’s hard seeing your old teammates starting while you’re not. I needed to clear my head.”
But despite the setbacks, Loris Karius finds pride in his journey.
“Less than one percent of footballers play in a Champions League final. It didn’t go how I wanted, but it’s still a part of my story.”
