I Can't Control These Things -- Mikel Arteta On Joining Real Madrid

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has dismissed rumours linking him to the vacant managerial position at Spanish giants, Real Madrid. Speaking to the media on Wednesday ahead of their Europa League clash against Sporting, Arteta insisted that he is “fully focused” on leading Arsenal to success.

The Gunners currently sit at the top of the Premier League table, having won 20 of their first 26 fixtures.

Mikel Arteta left his role as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City to join Arsenal in December 2019. While his first full season in charge saw Arsenal finish in eighth place, the Spaniard guided the team to FA Cup success.

Despite enduring a difficult period last season, which saw Arsenal suffer a late collapse, Arteta has turned the team into genuine title contenders this term. Real Madrid have reportedly taken note of his success and are said to be interested in appointing him as Carlo Ancelotti’s successor.

However, Mikel Arteta was quick to dismiss the speculation, stating that “managers and players can’t control what is written by the press.”

He went on to emphasise his commitment to Arsenal, saying “I’m fully focused on what I’m doing here and extremely proud and grateful to do what I’m doing in this football club. That’s it.”

Arteta’s comments come as Arsenal prepare to face Sporting in the first leg of their Europa League Round of 16 tie.

The Gunners won the first leg 1-0, thanks to a stunning free-kick from Martin Odegaard. With Arsenal sitting comfortably at the top of the Premier League table, Arteta will be hoping to guide his side to further success in the Europa League this season.
