Hushpuppi Given Sentence
Hushpuppi, a well-known Instagram influencer, whose real name is Ramon Olorunwa Abbas, has been declared guilty of fraud and given an 11-year prison sentence.
The United States Central District Court in California sentenced him to 11 years in prison.
Hushpuppi will nonetheless serve nine years in prison because he has already served two since his arrest in 2020.
12 other people and you were all arrested in Dubai: Hushpuppi was detained in Dubai in June 2020 along with 12 other gang members. He was then brought to the United States and accused of fraud and money laundering. They were accused of defrauding around 1,926,400 persons from various countries.
Abbas and his accomplices were then turned over to the FBI in the US by the Dubai Police, where they were ultimately charged with several crimes including conspiracy to commit money laundering.
The Justice Department also charged Hushpuppi with aiding North Korean hackers in money laundering and participating in online frauds run by three computer programmers accused of extorting $1.3 billion in fiat currency and bitcoin. Abbas participated in frauds that cost his victims a total of $24 million.
It was widely reported in July 2021 that he had entered a plea to charges brought against him by the United States District Court for the Central District of California, including money laundering, wire fraud, and felony.
