Veteran actor Donald Sutherland, renowned for his roles in iconic films such as “MAS*H,” “Klute,” and “The Hunger Games,” has passed away at the age of 88. His agency, Creative Artists Agency (CAA), confirmed his death on Thursday in Miami following a prolonged illness.

Sutherland’s son, Kiefer Sutherland, shared the news on Instagram, expressing deep sorrow. “With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away,” Kiefer wrote. He lauded his father as “one of the most important actors in the history of film,” noting his father’s fearless approach to every role he undertook. “He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived,” he added.

Donald Sutherland’s career spanned over six decades, during which he amassed nearly 200 film and television credits. His tall, distinctive presence and intense on-screen performances earned him numerous accolades, including an Emmy for his portrayal of a Soviet official in the 1995 TV movie “Citizen X,” as well as two Golden Globe Awards.

Sutherland’s career breakthrough came with his role in the 1967 star-studded film “The Dirty Dozen,” which became a major hit. He subsequently starred in other notable war films, including “Kelly’s Heroes.” His portrayal of the wisecracking doctor Hawkeye Pierce in the film “MAS*H” and his role opposite Jane Fonda in “Klute” further cemented his status as a versatile and formidable actor.
