Yesterday, a motorcyclist was crushed to death at the Okesa area of Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.

The motorcyclist, who was coming from the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium area, in an attempt to beat the traffic light at the Okesa intersection under the flyover bridge, was crushed by a Mazda MPV space bus with number plate FF 188 APP, which was heading to the Ojumose area of the city.

Following the impact of the accident, the space bus crashed into a Nissan truck, which obstructed the free flow of traffic on the busy road for several hours.

Eyewitnesses said the motorcyclist, whose identity could not be ascertained, suffered a broken head and died on the spot.

It was gathered that his remains had been deposited in the morgue of the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti, by men of the state Fire Service.

However, residents who gathered at the scene of the accident, said nobody could ascertain the whereabouts of the driver of the space bus.

A police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said efforts made to save the motorcyclist proved abortive as he did not survive the accident due to the serious injury he suffered.

He said, “I witnessed the accident. The traffic light had stopped vehicles coming from the stadium area and passed vehicles from the other side.

“But the motorcyclist defied the traffic light. Looking at how it happened, you can see the effect of speeding. This is a result of defying the traffic light. Drivers and motorcyclists have to be cautious and obey traffic lights, traffic rules and avoid excessive speeding.”
