On Friday, unidentified robbers attacked a police checkpoint at Eku in the Ethiope East Local Government Area of the state, shooting dead a policeman and a civilian.

It was gathered that the incident occurred around 9pm. It was further gathered that three policemen were on duty when the hoodlums invaded the checkpoint.

Sources said the slain civilian was in charge of lighting the police lamps every evening. It was learnt that the gunmen shot indiscriminately into the air as they approached the checkpoint.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, confirmed the incident.

She said the slain cop was shot in the head while the civilian was shot twice and died at the hospital. Onovwakpoye added that the police lost a rifle during the incident.
