How Ghana can still qualify for the AFCON knockout stages

All hope is not lost yet for Ghana in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), what they just need is an African miracle to shame its rival fans.

Ghana faced shocking setback in their quest for the Round of 16 in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a 2-2 draw with Mozambique. Despite initially holding a two-goal lead, the Black Stars were unable to secure a victory in their final group game.

As a result of the draw, Ghana finished in third place in Group B, accumulating two points, trailing behind Cape Verde and Egypt. While this outcome poses a challenge for the West African team, there remains a glimmer of hope for their continued presence in the tournament.

In the unique format of AFCON 2023, the best four teams finishing third in the group stage will also advance to the knockout phase. This sets the stage for Ghana to potentially progress further, contingent upon favorable outcomes in other group matches.

To secure their spot in the Round of 16, Chris Houghton’s squad is reliant on specific results in the upcoming fixtures. They will be hoping for a draw between Cameroon and Gambia in their final Group C game on Tuesday.

Additionally, Ghana needs Zambia to lose to Morocco in their last Group F match on Thursday. Furthermore, the Black Stars would benefit from DR Congo defeating Tanzania in their final Group F fixture.
