How Coutinho can influence Mason Mount decision
In a surprising turn of events, Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount finds himself at the center of transfer speculations as his contract negotiations with the club hit an impasse. The 24-year-old’s current deal at Stamford Bridge is set to expire in the summer of 2024, and despite ongoing talks, Mount has yet to commit to fresh terms.
Reports from the Evening Standard in April suggested that discussions between Mason Mount and Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly had been reopened, but a sticking point arose due to the club’s apparent reluctance to match the wages of fellow teammate Reece James, who signed a new contract last year. Additionally, the proposed length of the contract and the inclusion of certain clauses have further complicated the negotiations.
If Mount ultimately decides to part ways with Chelsea after an 18-year association, Liverpool has emerged as one of the top contenders to secure his signature, alongside Bayern Munich. However, recent reports from Football Insider suggest that Chelsea has grown increasingly confident that Mount will choose to stay, citing the anticipated appointment of former Tottenham and Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino as a crucial factor.
Interestingly, Mount could find himself faced with a decision reminiscent of one made by one of Pochettino’s former players. Back in 2017, The Sun reported that Philippe Coutinho, the former Liverpool star, was on the verge of joining Southampton before eventually making his move to Anfield from Inter Milan in January 2013.
According to the same source, Pochettino played a significant role in that transfer, having previously managed Coutinho during a loan spell at Espanyol.
Former Southampton chief executive Nicola Cortese even revealed in an interview with talkSPORT’s Jim White that he had agreed to a fee with Inter for Coutinho, only for Liverpool to swoop in with a late offer. Ultimately, the Brazilian attacking midfielder opted for Liverpool and the promise of regular European football, snubbing Southampton’s advances.
Now, Mason Mount faces a similar dilemma. The potential appointment of Pochettino at Chelsea adds an intriguing twist to the situation. While the Argentine manager possesses the necessary tools to succeed at the London club, he will need time to address a bloated squad and implement his preferred starting XI.
Moreover, Chelsea’s absence from European competitions next season could pose a significant challenge, potentially making their qualification for the 2024/25 campaign an uphill battle.
On the other hand, Liverpool’s strong performances this season virtually guarantee their participation in at least the Europa League next year.
Should Mason Mount opt for a move to Anfield, he could become part of a revitalization project that aims to restore Liverpool’s title-challenging capabilities, offering him a potentially brighter outlook compared to the potential uncertainties at Stamford Bridge.
As the summer transfer window looms, Mason Mount’s future remains uncertain.
The influence of former Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho, along with the potential arrival of Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea, adds an intriguing dimension to the player’s decision-making process.
Football fans worldwide eagerly await Mount’s final transfer decision, which could have far-reaching consequences for both his career and the Premier League landscape.
