How armed robbers killed man, escaped with ‘Ghana-Must-Go’ cash in Bayelsa

On Friday, yet-to-be-identified armed robbers shot Emmanuel Omomo. a middle-aged man dead, in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, and fled with money in a ‘Ghana-Must-Go’ bag found on him.

 

It was gathered that the incident happened at 10am within the premises of a bank around the Sani Abacha Expressway in Yenagoa where Omomo had gone to withdraw a huge sum of money.

After withdrawing the money, he was said to have entered a tricycle he allegedly arranged to take him to his destination when the robbers struck.

It was learnt that soon after he entered the tricycle, the assailants who had been allegedly lurking around, pulled up and blocked the tricycle.

An eyewitness, who claimed to be on the bank premises at the time of the incident, said after the blockade, the bandits ordered Omomo to hand over the ‘Ghana-Must-Go’ bag to them.

The eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, said the bank customer refused to release the bag, a situation which angered his attackers.

He said, “When they tried to forcibly collect the bag from him, he refused and ran out of the tricycle. It was at that point that the angry robbers pursued and shot him. He fell into a ditch along the road. The robbers engaged in a shooting spree to scare away other customers queuing on the bank premises before they sped off.”

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr Asinim Butswat, said the police authorities in the state had launched a manhunt for the gunmen.

He said, “The unfortunate incident occurred on July 3, 2020 around 10am, on the premises of a new generation bank in Yenagoa. A customer was accosted by gunmen after he withdrew money. The armed robbers, who came in a black Toyota Camry, accosted the customer, one Emmanuel Omomo, when he came out of the bank after making the withdrawals. They shot him and collected the money in his possession and zoomed off. The victim was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, where he was confirmed dead.”
