House of representatives passes bill to revert to old national anthem

In a swift legislative move, the House of Representatives has passed a bill to revert to the old national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.”

The bill sailed through its first, second, and third readings within minutes.

House Leader Professor Julius Ihonvbere led the debate, emphasizing the need for Nigerians to embrace the old anthem as a national symbol and sign of authority that acknowledges the country’s realities.

“Nigeria, We Hail Thee,” which was replaced in 1978 by “Arise, O Compatriots,” is seen by proponents as a more authentic representation of the nation’s heritage.

However, the bill faced opposition from Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda, who argued that the old anthem has colonial connotations, having been authored and composed by Britons.

Chinda questioned the relevance of changing the anthem amidst the country’s pressing challenges.

Despite the opposition, the bill was quickly passed by the House.

In the Senate, it cleared its first and second readings and has been referred to the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters.

The committee is expected to report back in two weeks.

Senators appeared largely supportive of the bill, arguing that reverting to the old anthem would better symbolize unity, peace, and prosperity for Nigeria.

Nigeria, We Hail Thee

Nigeria, we hail thee,

Our own dear native land,

Though tribe and tongue may differ,

In brotherhood we stand,

Nigerians all are proud to serve

Our sovereign Motherland.

Our flag shall be a symbol

That truth and justice reign,

In peace or battle honoured,

And this we count as gain,

To hand on to our children

A banner without stain.

O God of all creation,

Grant this our one request,

Help us to build a nation

Where no man is oppressed,

And so with peace and plenty

Nigeria may be blessed.
