Health advocates push for more global funding to fight Tuberculosis

Health advocates are urging the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria to increase its funding allocation for tuberculosis (TB), the world’s deadliest infectious disease.

Despite TB claiming 1.3 million lives annually, it receives only 18% of the Global Fund’s budget, far less than AIDS, which gets 50%, and malaria, which receives 32%.

The Global Fund Board is set to meet from November 19-22, where it will decide funding allocations for the period 2027-2029. Campaigners argue that increasing TB’s share to 33% would better reflect the disease’s mortality rate and help meet the goal of ending TB by 2030.

Advocates claim that the current funding split is discriminatory and outdated, as TB has received the same percentage of funding for over a decade despite its high death toll.

The TB33% Campaign is gathering petition signatures to push for change, which will be presented to the Global Fund’s leadership ahead of the decision.
