Harry Maguire, the Gift that keeps on Giving as English fans roast him

If there’s any footballer on planet Earth at the moment that people love to troll or create memes about, it’s Manchester United’s current captain and defender, Harry Maguire.

Since his move from Leicester City for a world renowned fee of 80 million Euros, the England international has been subject to criticisms and banter; either by rival fans or United supporters themselves.

But the latest comes due to his actions, or more plainly put, his shortcomings against Germany in last night’s Nations League clash that saw both teams end all square in a 1-1 draw.

England fans turned their star defender into a subject of mockery as they pointed out his error against German international and Chelsea star; Kai Havertz.

Harry Maguire had initiated a defensive move to try and muscle out the lanky Havertz off the ball during a one on one clash with the German, only for the move to backfire heavily against the English centre back.

The act alone led to a backlash from his own fans online after he had lost out in the battle of strength with the Germany forward.

Kai Havertz ended up unwittingly leaving the centre-back on the floor during the Nations League clash.

The move came with Maguire trying his best to hold off Havertz as a long ball was sent forward towards him, but instead he ended up falling to the ground after the lanky German attacker out-muscled him.

The error allowed Jonas Hoffman to run through on goal and score, but thankfully Maguire’s mistakes were spared and rewarded by the offside flag.

The incident is one that fans would consider funny considering the size of both players, with one England fan writing online:

“Maguire how you getting dashed by Kai Havertz he weighs like 8st,”

With another questioning:

“Where was Maguire on that straight forward long ball? Got lucky there.”

Others even wondered why the error prone defender was still in the Three Lions set up:

“How Maguire is anywhere near that team is genuinely flabbergasting.”

“How can Southgate pick Maguire after the season he’s had. Use these games to get Tomori in the team.”

With Harry Maguire, opinions aren’t lacking on his matter, as fans are always waiting in line for that slip up to troll him again.

England boss, Gareth Southgate though has continually stuck by him, forming a partnership with John Stones heading into the World Cup later this year.

Other centre-backs in the English set up are currently, AC Milan’s Fiyako Tomori, Wolves’ Conor Coady, and Marc Guehi.
