It very much was a dramatic day on the final match day of the Premier League season, and for Liverpool, a sad one; which Gundogan, Man City midfielder and rival of Liverpool, admits and sympathizes with.

The final match day of the league season was one that saw Liverpool have their hopes taken up only to be let down eventually as Aston Villa came close to within grasp of securing 3 points off City. But thanks to second half substitute, Ilkay Gundogan, the Cityzens came back into the game to claim all 3 points and become Champions.

Ilkay Gundogan, during his post match interview, was filled with emotions of joy, but amidst the smiles and tears, he took the noble decision to sympathize with rivals, Liverpool for coming short in the race to the title by just one point on Sunday evening.

He congratulated the Reds on the season they had, noting how the Reds had an incredible season that saw them lift both the FA Cup, Carabao Cup, and make it into the Champions League final amidst digging it deep to wrestle for the title till final match day.

Liverpool finish the league season on 92 points, just one behind City’s 93 and the Germany international praised and commiserate with Jurgen Klopp’s side.

“I know it’s tough to say, but if Liverpool wouldn’t be there and play the way they play, very successful, this league wouldn’t be that attractive,” Gundogan told Sky Sports.

“Even though they finished just one point behind us, they played an incredible season. They pushed us to the limit, it’s a sad day for them but we need to appreciate what they’ve done and especially my former coach.

“We look forward to competing with them next season,” he added.

Fair play to the German midfield maestro and congratulations to him again for being deserved English Premier League champions.
