“Guardiola is a disgrace” — Richard Keys blasts Man City boss
Richard Keys, the host for beIN Sports, has expressed strong disapproval of Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola’s behavior in a recent interview following the 1-1 draw against Liverpool on Sunday.
The match, characterized by Alexis Mac Allister’s penalty for Liverpool leveling John Stones’ close-range finish, ended without a clear winner despite Liverpool’s dominance in the second half.
One contentious moment occurred in injury time when Liverpool’s Jeremy Doku challenged Mac Allister with a high foot, prompting calls for a penalty. However, VAR reviewed the incident and deemed no foul had occurred.
With Arsenal topping the Premier League table by a single point ahead of Liverpool, and City trailing by a further point, tensions were high during the game and spilled over into the post-match interview.
During an interview with beIN Sports’ Andy Kerr, Guardiola discussed the match, provided an injury update on goalkeeper Ederson, and mentioned a disagreement with Kevin De Bruyne in the dugout after the midfielder was substituted.
Richard Keys, in his post-match blog, heavily criticized Guardiola’s demeanor during the interview, labeling it as “disgraceful” and “plain rude.” He expressed his disappointment with Guardiola’s dismissive attitude towards the reporter, stating that Kerr deserved better treatment.
“If I’d have been Kerr, I’d have shut the interview down and walked away,” Keys wrote. “Guardiola was a disgrace. He couldn’t be bothered, he offered nothing – just one-word answers and a daft smile.”
Keys further emphasized that while Guardiola may have contractual obligations to speak to the media, he also has a moral obligation to treat journalists with respect and manners.
“Here’s the thing Senor Guardiola. We’re all trying to do a job – just like you. Nobody, whilst doing that job, deserves to be ridiculed by you.
“Andy Kerr deserved better Sunday, not because you have a contractual obligation to speak to him – but because you have a moral obligation to treat him – and others – with manners and respect.” Richard Keys said.
Keys goes on to add;
“I could understand Guardiola’s attitude a little more if the pen had been given. If City had been beaten. If frustration had got the better of him – but none of those things applied.”
