Graham Potter Reveals Chelsea’s Penalty Taker
Chelsea’s manager, Graham Potter, has confirmed that Kai Havertz is the club’s new penalty taker after Jorginho’s departure to Arsenal during the January transfer window. Jorginho had been a reliable spot-kick taker during his time at Stamford Bridge, converting 27 of the 31 penalties he took for the club.
Ahead of Chelsea’s crucial Champions League clash against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday, Potter revealed that Havertz has been given the responsibility of taking penalties in the absence of Jorginho. The German international has not yet taken a penalty for Chelsea since joining the club from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2020.
Potter stated that the players are always practicing penalties, and they are well-prepared for any eventuality that may arise in the Champions League encounter. He said, “We want to win it before that [penalty shootout] but if not then we will be prepared to go through in that way. Kai is our penalty taker in the absence of Jorginho.”
Havertz has had a mixed season at Chelsea, scoring only six goals in 32 appearances across all competitions. The German attacker has not scored for a while this season as Chelsea has had quite the difficult spell in a number of games.
The turning light seems to be last weekend’s win against Leeds United in the premier league, with the Blues scavenging a 1-0 win through a Wesley Fofana header.
Chelsea go into the second leg of their Champions League tie against Dortmund with a 1-0 deficit after losing at Borussia Dortmund’s home ground. A place in the quarter-finals of the competition is at stake, and Potter will be hoping that Havertz can bring on his impressive form and help Chelsea secure their passage to the next round.
