Eid-el-Kabir message: Governors advocate unity

As the Muslim community worldwide celebrates Eid-el-Kabir, Gov. Hope Uzodimma of Imo State and Gov. Alex Otti of Abia State have called for increased religious tolerance between Muslims and Christians in Nigeria.

Gov. Uzodimma emphasized the importance of religious harmony for national progress during a Sunday gathering with Muslim leaders at the Government House in Owerri.

“By fostering peaceful coexistence between Muslim and Christian communities, we can ensure love, unity, peace, and development not only in Imo but throughout Nigeria,” he said.

He congratulated the Muslim faithful on completing their fasting and witnessing the 2024 Festival of Sacrifice (Eid-el-Kabir).

He urged both communities to embrace tolerance, stating, “Our faiths are pathways to reaching God. We cannot thrive amidst rancour, hatred, violence, and other vices condemned by both the Quran and the Bible.”

Uzodimma also acknowledged the solidarity shown by the Christian faithful who joined in the celebrations, highlighting the importance of unity.

“Sharing a meal signifies the potential to live, work, and protect our environment together,” he remarked. The governor also recognized fathers on International Father’s Day, appreciating their contributions to society’s well-being.

Alhaji Bashir Uwakwe, representing the Muslim community in Imo, expressed gratitude for the governor’s inclusive approach and assured continued unity and positive behaviour from the Muslim community. He also requested more opportunities for the Muslim faithful to participate in future Hajj pilgrimages.

Meanwhile, Gov. Alex Otti of Abia State, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Kazie Uko, urged residents to embody the spirit of Eid-el-Kabir by fostering a sense of community and mutual support. “This celebration promotes love and understanding among people of diverse cultures and beliefs,” he noted.

Otti highlighted the significance of sacrifice and selflessness, drawing from Prophet Ibrahim’s example. “As we celebrate this important festival, I encourage all Muslim faithful to emulate Prophet Ibrahim’s devotion and obedience to Allah,” he said.

The governor extended heartfelt greetings to the Muslim community and expressed hopes for peace, happiness, and unity during this festive period.

He assured that the State Government would continue to create equal opportunities and a conducive environment for all citizens to thrive. “We seek the ongoing support and cooperation of every resident in Abia,” Otti concluded.
