Gmail Q&A: Chat with Google’s Gemini AI on Android & iOS

Google has introduced a new feature called Gmail Q&A, allowing Android users to interact directly with Google’s AI assistant, Gemini, within the Gmail app.

This update, rolled out on Thursday, is available to users who subscribe to Gemini, with iOS support anticipated in the near future.

Gmail Q&A enables users to use Gemini as a personal assistant for email management. It can read and summarize your email inbox, providing responses to queries such as, “Catch me up on the emails about quarterly planning,” or “How much did the company spend on the last marketing event?”

The Gemini button will be added next to the search bar in the Gmail app, reflecting Google’s shift from traditional search to AI-driven interactions. Although the traditional search bar will remain, Gmail Q&A offers a more conversational approach to managing emails.

Accessing Gmail Q&A:

  1. Subscription Required: Ensure you have a Gemini or Google One AI Premium subscription, which costs approximately $20 per month.
  2. Find the Gemini Button: Open the Gmail app on your Android device. Look for the black star icon in the top-right corner of the app, representing Gemini.
  3. Use the Feature: Click on the Gemini icon to start interacting with the AI. You can ask it to summarize emails or search for specific details within your inbox.

Google acknowledges that AI models like Gemini may occasionally produce inaccurate information. Users should verify details provided by the assistant.

Google plans to expand Gmail Q&A to include access to files stored in Google Drive and is also working on making the feature available for iOS users.

Gmail Q&A was first rolled out to web users in June and represents a significant step in Google’s efforts to integrate AI into its product suite. The company is leveraging this feature to demonstrate the value of its subscription services and to drive adoption of its AI technology.
