FUTO announces resumption, students to pay N12,500 for damages

The Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), Imo, has announced the resumption of academic activities two months after the institution was closed.

John Nnabuihe, the registrar of the university, in a statement announced the immediate suspension of the closure and full commencement of all the school programs.

Students had in February destroyed properties in the institution in protest of the increment in their tuition fee.

Although the protest started peacefully, it soon degenerated into a vandalism spree.

Properties worth millions were said to have been destroyed.

The violence was reportedly ignited by policemen who fired teargas at the protesting students.

The students broke into the school’s ICT centre and looted computers and other electronic equipment.

Many faculty buildings were also said to have been vandalised by the students.

The registrar, while announcing the resumption, said that no undergraduate will be allowed access to the campus without paying N12,500 damage fee.

The students are also expected to sign a notarised undertaking to be of good behaviour.

Nnabuihe stated that the abandoned examinations would commence three weeks from the date of resumption.

The university was conducting its first semester examinations for the 2016 /2017 academic session when the protest ensued.
