Former Premier League Referee slams VAR injustice on Liverpool

The Fulham goal should not have stood in the first place, former Premier league referee criticizes the VAR decision to ignore the foul in the build up to Mitrovic’s goal against Liverpool.

The premier league season opener between Fulham and Liverpool, was quite the opening day classic that represented all the league was about.

There was the shock, the twist and don’t forget, the controversy, particularly with the first goal of the game that came from Fulham.

According to former premier league referee, Keith Hackett, the first goal by Aleksandar Mitrovic should not have stood considering an earlier foul committed on Liverpool captain, Jordan Henderson.

Analyzing the game on Football Insider, the former Premier League referee admits to being surprised that the Video Assistant Referee didn’t intervene to rule it off.

Before the goal, Jordan Henderson in the process of recovering possession after attempting a dribble, was fouled leading to a counter attack that was finished by Mitrovic.

Henderson stayed down in that time period holding his leg without any considering by referee, Andy Madley to blow for a foul or the VAR presence of Stuart Attwell to intervene.

Speaking on it, Keith Hackett said:

“When you make a statement about what is the threshold of what is a foul and what isn’t a foul, that leads the whole thing being open to inconsistency of interpretation,” Hackett said after analysing the footage with Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“Henderson’s not a player to do that, he’s been fouled.

“I think Fulham can count themselves lucky that they got away with it. It was a good move but it looked like a foul and it took out one of Liverpool’s players. I’m surprised that VAR didn’t come in there.

“They’ve raised the threshold for what is a foul and it appears they’ve raised the threshold of VAR in terms of when to come in.

“That’s resulted in a goal that probably should have been ruled out for a foul on Henderson.”
