Former Liverpool captain in line for Ajax move

It has been reported that former Liverpool captain, Jordan Henderson is on the verge of leaving Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq after spending just under six months with the club.

The decision comes amid challenges faced by the Liverpool legend, who arrived in Saudi Arabia following the appointment of Steven Gerrard as Al Ettifaq manager.

Initially, Henderson’s tenure at the club started on a positive note, with Al Ettifaq leading the Saudi Pro League after five games. However, the team’s fortunes took a downturn, failing to secure a victory since October 28.

Reports from earlier this month indicated that the 33-year-old midfielder was eager to cut short his Saudi adventure and make an immediate return to the Premier League.

According to The Athletic, Henderson has now agreed to terminate his contract with Al Ettifaq and is poised to join Dutch giants Ajax. The deal is currently in the finalization stage, and Henderson is reportedly flying back to the UK from the club’s winter training camp.

Allegedly, Henderson encountered difficulties adapting to the heat and humidity in Saudi Arabia and was dissatisfied with the club’s average attendance of 7,800. The report also suggested that he would be willing to accept a substantial pay cut to facilitate his departure.

With Ajax, Henderson aims to contribute to the team’s resurgence in the Eredivisie. Currently in fifth place, Ajax has bounced back from a challenging start to the season that saw them in the relegation zone for several weeks.

While they trail the league leaders PSV by 23 points, Henderson’s addition could bolster their campaign for a top-four finish and Champions League qualification.

Henderson’s return to the Premier League was seemingly not a feasible option, prompting him to seek a new adventure in the Netherlands.
