Former Lisbon chief blasts Ruben Amorim over Man Utd move
The anticipated transfer of Sporting Lisbon’s manager Ruben Amorim to Manchester United has ignited intense backlash from Sporting insiders, with former Sporting chief Jaime Marta Soares leading the charge.
Soares didn’t hold back, expressing his disappointment in what he sees as Amorim’s disregard for the club and its supporters, calling the manager’s exit a “betrayal.”
While Amorim addressed the rumors in a measured tone, stating, “Nothing is decided yet,” Soares claims Amorim’s departure mid-season is a slap in the face to the fans who once held him in such high regard.

Speaking on Radio Renascença, Soares lamented, “[Amorim] created a whole environment of adoration at Sporting, but it was all an illusion. Leaving this way? It’s like spitting on the plate that gave him his soup.”
For many, Amorim’s rise from a relatively unknown coach to a sought-after talent is inseparable from Sporting’s support. However, Soares insists that Amorim’s decision to leave for the Premier League, despite his success and acclaim in Lisbon, reveals the hollow side of the loyalty fans thought he had for the club.
With Sporting supporters already expressing mixed feelings on social media, it’s clear this is no quiet goodbye.
