Former Bauchi health commissioner, five-year-old boy killed in crash-TopNaija.ng

TopNaija gathered that The Head of Department, Community Medicine, College of Medicine, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, Dr Zuwaira Hassan, has been killed in a fatal crash.

Also killed in the crash was a five-year-old boy, who was knocked down by the driver of the former Commissioner for Health.

TopNaija learnt that the crash occurred on Monday at Zaranda village, about 36 kilometres from Bauchi metropolis.

Hassan, the Commissioner of Health during the immediate past administration of Mohammed Abubakar, died at the age of 46.

A younger brother of the deceased, Garkwu Adamu, who is the Public Relations Officer, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Bauchi State Command, confirmed the incident to our correspondent on the telephone interview, adding that the news was shocking and devastating.

He said, “Yes, it is true; she died this morning in an accident at Zaranda village on her way to Bauchi from Jos, Plateau State.

“They were three in the vehicle when the incident happened. It is a really sad and tragic incident. She was really hard working and dedicated to her work. We will really miss her a lot.”

When contacted, the Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, Bauchi State, Yusuf Abdullahi, who confirmed the crash, said he could not give the details because the rescue operation was conducted by the police.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Ahmed Wakil, confirmed the crash to our correspondent in a telephone interview, saying the accident occurred around 7.40am.

He said, “The black Toyota Corolla vehicle with number plate LFA 26 AK was driven by one Umar Anas, 30, of Dogon Dutse, Jos, Plateau State.

“Anas was the driver of Dr Zuwaira Hassan, a former Commissioner of Health, Bauchi State. They were coming back to Bauchi from Jos and on reaching Zaranda village, they knocked down a pedestrian, Abdullazeez Sanusi, a five-year old boy of Zaranda village.

“The driver of the vehicle, after hitting the boy, lost control and veered off his lane to the other lane and had a head-on collision with another vehicle, a white Boxer bus with number plate ALK 295 XA, driven by one Sarki Madala, 50,  of Zull village.

“Our men at the Toro Police Division were called and they rushed to the scene and evacuated the victims to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, for treatment.

“It was at the hospital that a medical doctor confirmed Abdullazeez Sanusi, the five-year-old boy, and Dr Zuwaira Hassan dead.”

He said that the corpses were released to the families for burial.

The funeral prayers for Hassan were held around 1.30pm at the ATBUTH Central Mosque on Monday.

The Chief Imam of the mosque, Amin Yelwan-Shendam, led the deceased’s family members, friends and hundreds of sympathisers during the prayers.

Hassan left behind a husband and three children.
