Former Arsenal icon lauds Chelsea star Moises Caicedo

Former Arsenal and World Cup-winning midfielder Emmanuel Petit has heaped high praise on Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo, boldly declaring him the Premier League’s standout midfielder so far this season.

Petit was particularly impressed with Caicedo’s performance in Chelsea’s recent 2-1 defeat to Liverpool, where the Ecuadorian not only displayed exceptional composure but also led by example, wearing the captain’s armband.

Speaking to Genting Casino, Petit revealed how Caicedo’s presence on the pitch stood out in the heated battle.

Premier League predictions for Matchday 8 Weekend

“Caicedo was the best player on the pitch against Liverpool. He showed great personality and mentality from start to finish. His ability to handle pressure, retain the ball with composure, and drive energy into the team was remarkable. In big games like this, you don’t have time to think, but Caicedo stayed sharp, gave an assist, recovered the ball, and showed so much energy.”

Petit also made it clear that Moises Caicedo shouldn’t be confined to the label of a “holding midfielder,” noting his broader capabilities.

“I don’t even like calling him a holding midfielder because he’s so much better than that. He’s a modern midfielder, able to dominate both defensively and offensively. For me, he’s definitely been one of the best players in the league this season.”

Petit further advised Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca to grant the club’s record signing more freedom to roam across the pitch, hinting at how the versatile Uruguayan could offer even more value to the team if given the opportunity to express himself beyond a rigid holding role.

Caicedo’s impressive start at Chelsea has caught the attention of many, and with praise from legends like Petit, it seems he’s well on his way to becoming a key figure in the Premier League.
