For exposing Adeosun’s fake NYSC certificate, Abdulaziz awarded by Wole Soyinka

“I think today we celebrate. Today, we celebrate the courage of a lot of Nigerians to come out on the issue. I had moments in the course of pursuing this story that I felt dejected and felt as if one was wrong.”

Sowore’s Rearrest: House of Reps directs committees to investigate court invasion

Sowore's Rearrest: House of Reps directs committees to investigate

The House of Representatives is now set to investigate the events surrounding the rearrest of the founder of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore in the Federal High Court, Abuja.

The House of Reps has directed the relevant house committees to investigate the incidence after a motion was moved by Minority Leader, Rep. Ndudi Elumelu (PDP-Delta).

The motion was moved under Matters of Urgent Public Importance at the plenary presided over by the Speaker, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila on Tuesday.

The committees are National Security and Intelligence, Judiciary, and Human Rights.

Elumelu said the investigation was on the “invasion of the Federal High Court premises Abuja by yet to be identified persons”.

He described the invasion of the court by unidentified persons as “disregard for the rule of law”.

He expressed concern that “men of the civil society” claimed that the unidentified masked men were agents of the Department of the State Services (DSS).

“The DSS has denied through their spokesman Peter Afunanya that its personnel were never involved in the incident.

“Sections 4, 5 and 6 of the 1999 Constitution as amended guarantees the separation of powers and the independence of every arm of government.

The lawmaker also expressed worry that the “act of the persons disrupted judicial proceedings and made the presiding judge to abandon her duty post because of safety concerns.

“This is a complete desecration of the temple of justice and such an action should be completely discouraged”.

He said that if the action was not properly checked, the National Assembly “may one day be invaded and the relevant security agencies will claim not knowing who the offenders are.”

He also said that the physical assault on Sowore and his co-defendant, Olawale Bakare by the yet-to-be-identified persons inside the courtroom was the “highest act of sacrilege” in the judiciary.

The House of Reps, however, directed the committees investigating to report back within two weeks, NAN reports.

"Forgive me", Fayose crries out to aggrieved PDP members

Former governor of Ekiti, Ayodele Fayose, on Tuesday, sought forgiveness from aggrieved members of the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

According to NAN, Fayose pleaded with members who may be aggrieved by any of his actions in the past to forgive him in his Afao-Ekiti home during a peace meeting he convened with party members in the state.

The former governor apologised to all aggrieved members who he said he might have wronged while in government.

He said the PDP must be repositioned ahead of future elections in the state, adding that nothing should be too much a sacrifice for anyone to make.

“We are on a mission to reposition the party because truly we need a new attitude as members of this party, “he said.

“We must tell ourselves the truth that there is nothing to share in failure and we must join hands to achieve something tangible.

“I know some persons are aggrieved and I know we are humans. I apologise to all those that I have offended.

“Let us come together in unity for this our party not to die in this state. That is my priority as the leader.

“I am doing this after one year of leaving office just to allow the present All Progressives Congress (APC) to display what they have for the people and you can all see for yourselves.

“I am not here for my selfish interest but just to ensure this party does not fail.”

The former governor, who used the meeting to officially congratulate Biodun Olujimi on her victory as the lawmaker representing Ekiti-south senatorial district, noted that she remained a leader of the party in the state.

“Everybody should come back to the party. I am open to reconciliation,” he said.

“If Senator Biodun Olujimi calls you for meeting tomorrow, go there and listen to her. All of us are leaders, don’t let us factionalise this party.

“I am congratulating her and I don’t have any issue with her and I am sorry for what happened in the past.”

New Emirates: You can’t usurp power of Kingmakers court tells Ganduje

New Emirates: You can't usurp power of Kingmakers court tells Ganduje

A High Court in Kano State has given an interim order restraining the state governor from “taking away the powers” of the four kingmakers of the Kano Emirate under the Kano States Emirate Council Law, 2019.

The court presided over by Justice A. T. Badamasi also restrained the governor from “taking any step whatsoever under the law without consultation with the applicants pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.”

These are the two instructions that the order contained.

Counsel on the two sides of the matter have refused to comment on the orders granted by the court, but a Kano-based private lawyer, who would not want to be named, said the “court has not really restrained the state governor the way the applicants had prayed.

“First, the emir of Kano was not one of the applicants. Two, the order did not restrain the Emir of Kano from chairing the Council of Chiefs’ meeting, and three, the court has effectively recognized the Kano State Emirates Council Law, 2019. Also, the restriction given by the court does not involve the four new emirs.

“Only the governor was restricted, but don’t forget that all the powers given to the governor by the new law have already been exercised.

“Now, the question to be asked is what is the governor’s concern with the powers of the kingmakers? Their powers are to be exercised whenever there is a vacancy, and an emir is to be chosen to fill that vacancy.”

Rotimi Akeredolu condemns DSS invasion of court

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has maintained that operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, desecrated the courtroom when it attempted to re-arrest Omoyele Sowore, convener of RevolutionNow Movement inside an Abuja Federal High Court.

Rotimi Akeredolu, who spoke at the opening of the 65th-anniversary conference of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Ibadan Branch held at Aare Afe Babalola Bar Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan, on Monday, urged legal practitioners to condemn the act by the DSS.

The Governor warned that judges were at risk of being arrested in “wig and gown during court session” if the bar refuses to condemn such action by the secret police.

He said: “We must be terror against demagogues. It is when the voice of the bar is heard consistently that it will earn respect.

“Will people go and desecrate our courtrooms and we keep quiet? The bar must condemn it. There is no explanation anybody can give you.

“Somebody calls it drama. Drama! How? What we saw was not drama, you must stand up to condemn the SSS for what they did in Abuja.

“Our spirit must remain indomitable. Forget about where we are today because a lot of us made efforts to say what you have done is wrong and the only way out was apologize almost immediately, but what people believe is different. You must write to justify what is not justifiable.

“If we are not careful, the day will come that people will walk into a judge’s sitting and arrest people with their wig and gown.

“I am not saying our judges are timid, but in the face of the gun, most of our judges will shake.”

Finland gets 34-year-old female Prime Minister

Finland’s Social Democrats have elected a 34-year-old woman as Prime Minister of the country, making her the youngest head of government in its history.

AFP reports that Sanna Marin narrowly won Sunday’s vote to replace outgoing leader, Antti Rinne, who resigned on Tuesday after losing the confidence of the coalition partner Centre Party over his handling of a postal strike.

“We have a lot of work to do to rebuild trust,” Marin told journalists on Sunday night, while deflecting questions about her age.

“I have never thought about my age or gender, I think of the reasons I got into politics and those things for which we have won the trust of the electorate.”

At 34, Marin also becomes one of the world’s youngest state leaders, ahead of Ukraine’s Prime Minister, Oleksiy Honcharuk, who is currently 35.

Former PM Antti Rinne had headed Finland’s centre-left five-party coalition since June, and Marin’s appointment is unlikely to lead to significant policy changes by the Social Democrat-led administration.

President Buhari jets out to Egypt for meeting

President Muhammadu Buhari will depart Abuja on Tuesday for Aswan, Egypt to attend a meeting designed to set “an agenda for sustainable peace and development in Africa.”

Presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina made this known in a statement on Monday.

“The initiative is being launched by the Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in his capacity as the Chairman of the African Union (AU) and as an advocate of Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development in Africa – a recurring theme of his tenure as the AU Chairman,” the statement said.

“It is also grounded in the AU’s Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want, and the search for African solutions to African problems.

“The gathering is expected to bring together heads of state and government, leaders from regional and international organisations, financial institutions, private sector and civil societies.

”(Others are) scholars, visionaries and prominent experts for action-oriented discussions on the threats, challenges, and opportunities.

“It is also expected to end with a Declaration on the theme of the Forum and become an annual event.”

Ali Abdel Aal, Speaker of Egypt’s house of representatives, had delivered al-Sisi’s message to Buhari in Abuja in October while inviting him to the inaugural Aswan forum.

Adesina said the President Buhari will be accompanied by Ahmadu Fintiri, governor of Adamawa state, Godwin Obaseki, governor of Edo, and Mai Mala Buni, governor of Yobe.

Others in President Buhari’s delegation are Bashir Magashi, minister of defence; Zubairu Dada, minister of state, foreign affairs; Babagana Monguno, national security adviser, and Ahmed Abubakar, director-general of national intelligence agency.

The president is expected back in Abuja on Friday.
