“Football is happier when Neymar is on the pitch” — Ednaldo Rodrigues

Former Paris Saint-Germain star forward, Neymar Jr faces a potential end to a promising career following his recent injury while on international duty with Brazil due to a severe knee injury in the 2-0 defeat to Uruguay.

The star forward ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in his left knee while representing Brazil in the 2026 World Cup qualifier against Uruguay, leading to immediate concerns about his future playing career.

Neymar, who was in tears when he was carried off the field after an unfortunate challenge in the match, expressed his sorrow on Instagram.

He wrote,

“It’s a very sad time, the worst. I know I’m strong, but this time I’m going to need my family and friends even more.”

He also mentioned the challenges ahead, stating, “It’s not easy to go through injury and surgery, imagine going through it all again after four months of recovery.”

The extent of Neymar’s recovery time remains uncertain, but a typical prognosis for an ACL rupture or tear suggests a rehabilitation period of eight to 10 months.

In recent years, Neymar has been plagued by injuries, causing some to speculate about his future in the sport. The uncertainty around his return has left fans anxious and concerned.

Al Hilal, in particular, may bear a heavy financial burden should Neymar’s absence become a long-term issue. Neymar’s transfer from Paris Saint-Germain to the Saudi Pro League side this summer came with a staggering initial fee of €90 million (£78 million).

Reports indicate that his wage package is on par with Cristiano Ronaldo’s earnings at Riyadh rivals Al Nassr, amounting to approximately €200 million (£173 million) per year, over a two-year contract.

Considering Neymar’s limited appearances for Al Hilal, with just five games played, three of which were in the Saudi Pro League, the potential financial impact is substantial.

If Neymar never plays for the club again, the cost per appearance would be an astonishing €98 million (£85 million). This could potentially place a significant strain on the club’s finances.

The Brazilian Football Confederation president, Ednaldo Rodrigues, emphasized the importance of Neymar’s recovery, not only for Al Hilal but for football as a whole, stating,

“Brazilian and world football need Neymar healthy and recovered because football is happier when he’s on the pitch.”
