“Football has won today” — Rodri mocks Real Madrid
Rodri, the midfield maestro behind Manchester City’s success, has taken home the 2024 Ballon d’Or, cementing his status as the best player in the world.
The Spanish international did not hesitate however to throw subtle jabs at Real Madrid after receiving the award.
In a heartfelt speech in Paris, Rodri stole the show by revealing a deeper side to his football career.

Ballon d’Or: Rodri emerges winner amidst Real Madrid snub
Grateful for the accolade, Rodri first addressed his partner, Laura, marking their eighth anniversary with a tender tribute.
“Today is a special day not just for me but for my family,” he shared, giving a rare glimpse into the personal support system that has propelled him to greatness.
From his agent Paulo, who fueled his dreams, to the teammates he called “the best club in the world,” Rodri left no stone unturned in crediting those who have shaped his journey.
But it was a story from his youth that held the room’s attention. Rodri shared a defining moment at age 17, when he nearly gave up on his dreams after a rough season.
Holding back emotion, he recalled his father’s words that pushed him to keep going. “My father said, ‘We came all the way here, let’s keep going,’ and this changed my mindset forever.”
Beyond his triumph with Manchester City and Spain, this Ballon d’Or symbolizes Rodri’s relentless spirit and dedication. His win, he says, is “for Spanish football,” even predicting young stars like Lamine Yamal will one day carry the torch.
In quote, he said;
“I want to mention my teammates with whom I won the Euro title with, especially Dani Carvajal who suffered the same injury that I suffered. Lamine Yamal, I know you will win this award soon. This is a victory for Spanish football and many of my friends have written to me to say, ‘FOOTBALL HAS WON TODAY!”
