First ever Miss Nigeria celebrates as she clocks 93 years old

Chief Grace Atinuke Oyelude, the first Miss Nigeria, celebrates her 93rd birthday.

In 1957, the Chief became the first woman to win the title of Miss Nigeria amongst hundreds of other female Nigerians.

Grace Atinuke was raised in Northern Nigeria and was chosen to represent the area after her brother submitted her picture to the pageant’s organizers, Daily Times.

Winners were chosen based on their submitted images back then, and as soon as she won, she vanished from the spotlight, using the £200 cash reward to fly to England and enroll in Nursing School.

She became a nurse and was given the titles Iyaolu of Isaluland and Iyalode of Okunland.

The Miss Nigeria organization had gifted her a Peugeot back in 2015 and has always celebrated the birthday of the ex-beauty queen.

This year they took to their Instagram to say;

“We are immensely delighted to celebrate the evergreen beauty and brave leader, Chief Grace Atinuke Oyelude, on the occasion of her 93rd birthday.”

“Her courage, resolve, and great strength of character are excellent qualities that have endeared her to us and many others.

Happy birthday once again, to the very first Miss Nigeria, Chief Grace Atinuke Oyelude.
Thank you for pavering the way and setting the standards that all Miss Nigeria Queens walk through as well as your priceless contributions towards women empowerment.”
