FG launches surveillance hub for Third Mainland Bridge security
The Federal Government has launched a state-of-the-art observation room for the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos, aimed at enhancing security and rapid response on one of the country’s busiest highways.
The Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, announced the development during an inspection tour of ongoing infrastructure projects across the southwest region, accompanied by members of the National Assembly.
The facility, staffed by personnel from the Army, Navy, Police, and local security forces, will coordinate security efforts on the bridge and nearby areas. Equipped with a dedicated boat and a fleet of vehicles, the observation room enables response teams to reach incidents on the bridge within five minutes, according to Umahi.
The Minister also confirmed plans to expand this security model to other major roads across the country, including the Lagos-Calabar and Abuja-Kano highways, along with implementing solar lighting on these routes to improve safety and nighttime visibility.
In his comments, Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Peter Nwebonyi, praised the project, noting that it demonstrates the government’s commitment to progress, security, and infrastructure safety.
Nwebonyi emphasized that the CCTV system would be instrumental in deterring vandalism and safeguarding critical infrastructure components, such as handrails and lighting, on Third Mainland Bridge.
In addition to security measures, the Ministry of Works is focused on road infrastructure development. Senator Osita Ngwu, the Senate Minority Whip, highlighted the recent initiation of the Lagos-Calabar coastal road segment in Ondo, commending the government’s dual focus on building and securing infrastructure for long-term use.
Senator Ngwu further underscored the Senate’s support for Umahi’s initiatives, along with assurances of legislative backing for ongoing projects.
The visit also emphasized accountability in infrastructure spending, with the Chairman of the House Committee on Works, Akin Alabi, pledging to ensure oversight, particularly regarding the 2024 budget appropriation.
He praised the Minister’s dedication to addressing infrastructure needs and affirmed the role of the National Assembly in maintaining transparency and holding contractors accountable.
This move marks a significant step in Nigeria’s strategy to bolster road infrastructure security while improving the quality of highways and expanding national oversight of public projects.
