FG distributes 64 CNG buses to cut transport costs

The Federal Government has handed over 64 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses, each with a 100-seat capacity, to organised labour and student union leaders in a bid to alleviate transportation costs following the removal of fuel subsidies.

The brief handover ceremony took place at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja on Sunday.

In addition to the buses, the government distributed over 400 CNG conversion kits to private transport operators in four states. This initiative is part of a broader effort to reduce the high cost of vehicle fueling, particularly in public transportation.

This move comes after months of public outcry over rising transport costs due to the elimination of fuel subsidies. The presidency has been actively promoting the switch to CNG as a cost-effective alternative, aiming to convince drivers to convert their vehicles.

Organised labour, which has long called for relief measures, emphasized the need for more CNG vehicles on the road to ease the financial burden on citizens.

This initiative marks a significant step toward reducing transportation costs and encouraging a transition to more sustainable energy sources for public transit.
