FFP: Manchester United face Ruben Amorim reality

As Manchester United zeroes in on Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim to replace Erik ten Hag, the saga has quickly turned into a financial balancing act that could push the club to the brink of Financial Fair Play (FFP) limits.

Though United signaled readiness to pay Amorim’s £8.3 million release clause, Sporting reportedly has additional demands that could complicate the deal: compensation for Amorim’s entire coaching team and an extra fee to sidestep the 30-day notice period.

United’s troubles don’t end there. Ten Hag’s surprise dismissal on Monday comes with a hefty compensation payout, adding pressure on a budget already stretched by the club’s recent financial disclosures—a £257.4 million loss over the last three seasons. And while minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has privately hinted at “testing the limits” of FFP, United still insists they’ll steer clear of any breach.

With Van Nistelrooy poised to manage United’s Carabao Cup game against Leicester, all eyes are on how United plans to manage both its managerial carousel and financial obligations.

As they inch closer to Premier League FFP boundaries, the club’s pursuit of Ruben Amorim may not be as straightforward as expected. Fans can only hope United’s next move won’t end up costing them more than they bargained for, both on and off the field.
