Federal University Wukari shut down till further notice over Jukun militia killings

Some individuals believed to be members of Jukun militia allegedly invaded the campus of Federal University Wukari in Taraba State on Tuesday, killing three people. The victims include two students and a university lecturer. The university has now been temporarily shut down following the protest that greeted the killing of two students and a lecturer of the institution.
The killing sparked protest among Tiv students and staff of the institution. Consequently, the management of the institution has ordered for the suspension of all academic activities in the university till further notice.
A circular signed by the school Registrar, Magaji Thomas Gangumi on Wednesday morning, indicated that all students are expected to leave the University premises before 12:00noon on Wednesday.
He said, “The Committee of Deans and Directors of Federal University, Wukari, on behalf of the Senate, has approved the suspension of lectures and closure of the institution till further notice.
”This follows the protest by students over the kidnapping of their mates along Wukari-Katsina-Ala highway on Tuesday.
“Students are directed to vacate the hostels and the university premises by or before 12 noon on Wednesday”.
Also, Prof. Abubakar Kundiri, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, has given assurance that adequate security measures have been put in place to ensure the safety of staff and students as they leave Wukari.
He equally stated that security had also been beefed up by the army and police to ensure that members of the academic community left Wukari without any hitch.
