Federal Government to upgrade Alau Dam in Borno State
The Federal Government has announced the immediate commencement of an upgrade to the Alau Dam in Maiduguri, Borno State.
This move aims to address ongoing flooding issues and improve infrastructure resilience in the region.
The announcement was made in a press statement by Funmi Imuetinyan, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation. The upgrade follows severe flooding that has displaced residents, submerged farmland, and disrupted economic activities in Maiduguri.
Water Resources and Sanitation Minister Prof. Joseph Utsev, along with Minister of State Bello Goronyo, visited Maiduguri to assess the situation. They were accompanied by a team of experts and senior officials who conducted a thorough evaluation of the recent floods.
Prof. Utsev emphasized the government’s commitment to a comprehensive overhaul of the Alau Dam, stating that any delays or substandard work would be met with strict penalties. He also announced plans for immediate interventions to control waterborne diseases, including the provision of sanitation kits and water treatment facilities to displaced individuals.
Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Zulum, expressed appreciation for the Federal Government’s swift response. He highlighted the need for a detailed study of the dam, improved flood forecasting systems, and investments in clean energy and irrigation to address climate change impacts and desertification.
The upgrade of the Alau Dam marks a significant step towards mitigating flood risks and enhancing infrastructure in Borno State.
