Fear grips U.S as Iran threat looms
The United States has heightened its state of vigilance in anticipation of a potential attack by Iran targeting Israeli or American assets in the region, following Israel’s recent strike on the Iranian embassy in Syria.
A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed on Friday that the nation is on high alert and preparing for any imminent threat.
According to a report by CNN, the U.S. official stated that there are concerns an attack could occur within the next week, prompting authorities to maintain a heightened level of readiness.
The escalation began when suspected Israeli warplanes carried out airstrikes on Iran’s embassy in Damascus earlier in the week. The attack resulted in the death of an Iranian military commander, Mohammad Reza Zahedi, along with six other Iranian military advisers. Zahedi was a senior commander in Iran’s elite Quds Force, which is responsible for foreign espionage and paramilitary operations.
In response to the strike, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has declared its right to retaliate decisively. This threat has prompted the United States to take proactive measures, with President Joe Biden addressing the situation in a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday.
A senior official from the Biden administration stated, “Our teams have been in regular and continuous contact since then. The United States fully supports the defense of Israel against threats from Iran.”
